Introducing Halspan’s revised Prima 60 Field of Application Part 1

Halspan Stand: 4/J15

Crafted from Halspan’s unique 3-layer particle board, Prima 60 internal fire door blanks stand out for their exceptional quality, strength, and overall performance. These blanks are engineered to meet the highest standards through a complex combination of chemical and engineering processes.

The revised Prima 60 Field of Application is founded on over 100 fire tests and provides an unrivalled fire door scope of any certification document for 60-minute timber doors.

In addition, the revision significantly extends the scope of our Halspan Verified Fire Door Systems.

Halspan Verified is a revolutionary quality assurance scheme which ensures compliance at every stage of the door supply chain, from production and testing to inspection and ongoing maintenance.

Over the last few years there has been an increased spotlight on the certification of fire resisting doorsets. In response, Halspan have been busy testing the most onerous design details and hardware components. These tests have now been thoroughly integrated by product assessors from a leading UK approved body to produce the new suite of Prima 60 certification documents.

The suite includes:

  • Part 1 Timber Based Door Frames
  • Part 2 Steel Frames
  • Part 3 Bond up designs (panels, grooves etc)
  • Part 4 PVC products (edge guards, fully encapsulated doors etc)
  • Part 5 Prima Plus 60 (no added formaldehyde core).

Part 1 of the revised Prima 60 FoA suite focuses on Timber Based Door Frames carefully analysing the fire resistance performance of specified proprietary Halspan Prima 60 doorset designs.

This assessment is vital for evaluating a door’s integrity and insulation performance, in line with BS 476-22: 1987 standards. Keep an eye out for Parts 2, 3, 4 and 5, coming in the next few weeks. Whilst the new Prima 60 FoAs maintain certification to BS 476-22, it is worth noting that the majority of testing was actually carried out to the more onerous European standard, EN 1634-1.

In this news item, we explore the unrivalled scope contained in the revised Prima 60 FoA Part 1. These revisions mark a substantial advancement in door technology and design, guaranteeing that fabricators and specifiers no longer need to sacrifice quality or compliance with safety regulations for the sake of design and aesthetics. It’s no wonder the Prima 60 is the architect and building owner’s dream door core!

Key Revisions in Detail

Enhanced Glazing

The improved glazing section in Prima 60 doors broadens door design opportunities. Now permitting glazing in doors of up to 1.25m2 featuring new glass types and seals, it opens up many more possibilities for architects and designers. Larger vision panels also mean more natural light can flood into interior spaces, bringing to life brighter, more inviting environments.

Additionally, the superior seals ensure that these glazed sections will maintain their integrity, improving insulation and soundproofing. This upgrade not only enhances the door’s overall aesthetic but also contributes to energy efficiency and acoustic comfort within buildings.

Certifire Approved Systems

Certifire, an independent third-party certification scheme for passive fire products, assures performance, quality, reliability, and traceability. Tested with Certifire approved glass and glazing systems, the new FoAs now give peace of mind, knowing that they are using materials that meet strict standards for fire resistance and performance. This approval not only offers assurance but also ensures flexibility. Fabricators now have a broader selection of certified components for glass and glazing systems, allowing for improved choice and versatility in their projects.

Innovative Door Mechanisms

These FoAs now permit transom closers for double-acting doorsets. Traditionally, floor springs have been used in such applications, but they can be impractical in certain spaces. Transom closers offer a more versatile solution, especially in areas where underfloor heating is present or where there are expensive floor finishes. Additionally, this Prima 60 doorset design has also been rigorously tested for smoke leakage with both floor springs and transom closers, ensuring that they not only provide reliable operation but also contribute to overall fire safety measures in buildings.

In addition, we also have the widest range of concealed overhead door closers certified, catering for all requirements utilising top quality concealed closers including the Halspan 6200 and 9200 units.

Diverse Access Control Solutions

Access control is often a critical aspect of modern building design. With Prima 60 FoAs offering the largest range of certification for access control systems, fabricators and specifiers have access to a diverse array of solutions. Whether it’s electronic locks, key card readers, or biometric scanners, Prima 60 FoAs ensure that fabricators have access to certified components that seamlessly integrate with their doorsets. This versatility allows for the implementation of tailored access solutions that meet the specific security requirements of different projects, from commercial buildings to healthcare facilities.

Modular System Expansion

Incorporating fanlight and sidelight modular systems into Prima 60 FoAs expands design possibilities. These modular systems facilitate the integration of extra natural light sources into doorsets. Whether it’s a fanlight above the door or sidelights flanking it, these modular systems offer customisable options to suit the aesthetic and functional needs of any project.

Increased Leaf Sizes

Testing with larger leaf sizes broadens design possibilities, particularly for storey-height doorsets. This enables the accommodation of more expansive openings, providing architects and builders with increased flexibility in their design selections and allowing for the creation of much grander entrances.

Magnetic Lock Options

Exploring magnetic lock options is a key focus of the Prima 60 FoAs. These locks offer dependable security, making them the perfect choice for a range of applications where security is a top priority. Whether you need single or double magnetic locks, the Halspan/RGL range has you covered.

Multi-Point Locking Options

Over the last few years Halspan have focused on testing with market leading multi-point locking systems from the likes of Winkhaus, Dormakaba and Glutz. This is in addition to the Halspan multi-point lock which provides a robust solution for both fire and security performance.

Automatic Door Operators Covered

The Dormakaba ED250 automatic door operator revolutionises accessibility for timber doors. With powered operation available for both single and double doors, it is a great option for spaces needing assisted disabled access. This solution not only adds convenience but also ensures compliance with accessibility standards.

Wide Range of Shadow Gap Details

For those seeking a sleek and modern finish, the Prima 60 FoAs cover a wide range of shadow gap details. These designs create a stylish and neat appearance, ideal for contemporary interiors where traditional architraves may not be desired. With this flexibility, architects can achieve a clean and sophisticated look in their designs.

4-Sided Door Frames

Ideal for riser door applications, 4-sided door frames provide the perfect solution when a “bund wall” is required. This comprehensive coverage ensures that every aspect of the door frame is accounted for, meeting the specific needs of projects where containment and safety are of high importance.

Integral Architrave Frames in Hardwood and MDF

Integral architrave frames are a fantastic design addition that not only saves time during installation but also offers flexibility, especially in situations where wall thicknesses vary. Whether you prefer hardwood or MDF, these frames maintain the aesthetics of your space while streamlining the construction process.

Extended Groove Design Options

From classic panel effects to contemporary grooved patterns, designers now have greater freedom to create custom looks that suit any aesthetic.

Hygeno IntaVista and FlushView Glazing Units

In healthcare settings where hygiene and privacy are paramount, the Hygeno IntaVista and FlushView glazing units are a great choice. These specialised glazing systems offer a perfect balance of cleanliness and discretion, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
