SSAIB operates the BAFE SP203-1 modular
certification scheme for providers of fire detection
and fire alarm systems designed for organisations
involved in one or more of the following scopes:
• Design
• Installation
• Commissioning and Handover
• Maintenance
The modular approach allows multiple
organisations to contribute towards a fire detection
and fire alarm system while ensuring full
certification for the entire system. This structure
reflects the real-world operation of the fire
detection and fire alarm industry.
Scheme Modules
• System Design – Designers must be competent
and be able to demonstrate compliance with
standards, system integration with other building
safety devices/services, and compliant
connections to electrical supplies. Designer input
must be available until project completion.
• Installation – Installers must demonstrate
competence in relevant standards, electrical and
mechanical safety, and maintain complete
installation records.
• Commissioning and Handover – The responsible
parties must be competent and have in-depth
knowledge of the system, conduct thorough
testing, and provide accurate commissioning
records.
• Maintenance – Maintenance providers must be
competent in servicing installed equipment and
keeping detailed records of maintenance work
performed.
Market Requirements
Fire detection and fire alarm system design,
installation, commissioning and maintenance must
consider reducing false alarms and unwanted fire
and rescue service attendance. Maintenance
providers must also monitor false alarm
occurrences as part of their contractual duties.
